At the Turn of the Tide by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

I re-read two books this summer, The Great Gatsby (1925) and The Magic Mountain (1926). And not until the end of the latter one I realised that they reflect the mid-twenties more than maybe any other books from that time, that there are so many similarities to our times in them and that, being a fan of both transformation and morphing, the veiled power within them origins from exactly that source. A power that fascinates me more than ever before.

Thomas Mann's atomic precision with which he reflects upon the events of a European continent turned upside down and on the verge to wars and catastrophes (but set in a pre-nostalgic setting, at the back-drop of the Alpes in a supposedly idyllic mountain retreat), clinging onto the only thing we can cling to in such times; the artistic vision and storytelling powers that lie within us. Little did he know, that he himself with his huge family (of six kids! most of them later to become writers in their own right) would have to flee nazi-Germany, first to Sanary, France, and then to California, in 1933.

Gatsby took up his drink.
"They certainly look cool," he said, with visible tension.
We drank in long, greedy swallows
"I read somewhere that the sun's getting hotter every year," said Tom genially. "It seems that pretty soon the earth's going to fall into the sun - or wait a minute - it's just the opposite - the sun's getting colder every year.
"Come outside," he suggested to Gatsby. "I'd like you to have a look at the place."

In Fitzgerald's Gatsby everything is glowing. And isn't this the twilight that illuminates every time of grand change? The Gold, the Glitter and the Godly? But, what Gods do we pray to? And what can they do for us? I have no answer but only more questions, digging into the material that dreams and history are made of. At the turn of the tide, some 100 years later. Same issues, same glow, same power of transformation.

Then wear the golden hat, if that will move her;
If you can bounce high, bounce for her too,
Till she cry "Lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover,
I must have you!"

Still life, reproduced // Art watching in Antwerp by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

The Flemish masters surround me, it must be one of the strongest museums to be seen in Europe. It’s noticeable and feelable that the collection has grown and matured over centuries. Conceived, produced, raw-materials stolen, artworks juxtaposed and separated, restored and forgotten.

So, the lesson to be learned is that nothing can be kept. There is no stand-still state. Except maybe in a museum. Where the Stilleben still lives on, showing us long forgotten table settings caught and frozen in time, carriers of dreams from old days, from former definitions of luxury. The birds, the fruit, the vases and the objects. All vanity vanishing.

But, the artistic statement stays.

Stay curious! Always.

Yours,

Mikael

Die Brücke // Der Übergang by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

Und dann weiter genau so smooth, in “I Thrawl the Megahertz” von Prefab Sprout. Traumhaft.

Material in Form gebracht.

„Hers is the wingspan of the quotidian angel” und ich fliege weiter.

Unbenennbar schön, diese Sensation. Und dann weiterhören, immer weiterhören, in neue Gefilde hinein weiterhören.

Euer Mikael

Stunden by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

Musiken varar i stunden.

Wolfgang Rihm in memoriam by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

Entweiht, sagen Sie? „Kulturkirche” - was meinen Sie damit?

Art by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

Art

Art could be so many things.
Art could be traveling the world and collecting your impressions.
Art could be your personal story.
Art could be writing ridiculous sentences like:
“To sit and watch the leaves flatter and feel the first careful raindrop touch your skin.”

And although all of this is true, art is not this but the inner truth covering the void of being human. Of ridiculous lack of stylishness and Raffinesse.
As in the little difference between going back to f minor from the dominant, or taking the risky leap into new light. Shimmering in Db Major.

Fred -> frid by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

Minfälten röjdes
Bomberna föll uppåt igen
Sögs in i flygplanens buk
Imploderade, ljudlösa

Och hela schabraket backade tillbaka
Över gränsen, in i garage och hangarer
Kedjades fast i sina bojor
Tömdes på bränsle

Och fridens stillhet sänkte sig över nejden
Inte ett ljud
Inte en själ
Inte en enda anledning till oro
Sova gott igen

Vattenhålet by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

OUTERSPACE - Jodlowski Concert in Graz on the 25th of January by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

Dear Fans and Friends!

I rarely write about a certain concert on the blog, but this one is special. Playfully dealing with the directionality in the performance space, linking the fictive digital world in a wonderfully artistic way with our real acoustic world - French composer Pierre Jodlowski’s piece OUTERSPACE for trombone, video and lights will be my first big highlight of the new year!
Best, Mikael

Minciospace by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

Weltschmerz by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

- B. Brecht “Panzerschlacht“

Form and the Ocean by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

One thing that struck me during my long vacation was the need of form and shape. It seems that we can do nothing, compose nothing, think nothing, achieve nothing without putting it into a frame or giving it at least some kind of context. Let me explain:

The most formless thing I can imagine is the open sea. But when we as humans enter the sea there is this need of keeping things together, not sprawling out, caring for peace and order. Look at the strict schedules of single-handed solo sailors (getting up at six every morning, carefully pointing out positions on a sea chart, preparing meals). I like to think of days like plain canvas, but we have to give it all a proportionality. Without structure - our efforts are worth nothing.

And also, if we wouldn’t give the ocean our connotation of longing and imagination, it would mean nothing:

- Romain Gary

Wachstum - Brief an den Wald by Mikael Rudolfsson - Trombone

An alles was gedeiht

An alles was sich an einander reiht

An geteilte Zellen

Zellteilung

An sich vermehrende Wellen

An das emporsteigende Schöne

und

An das knackende Geräusch

des Wachsens

und die Stille danach

An die zerbrochenen Äste

und die wohlwollenden Gäste

Als Aufforderung an uns alle

An alles was gedeiht

An alles was im Wilden sich macht weit

und an den nächsten Menschenkreis
