English Biography

Mikael Rudolfsson (born 1987 in Stockholm) has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young soloists of the contemporary music scene.

His passion for the music of our day has led to performances at renowned festivals and in acclaimed halls worldwide, like Konzerthaus Wien, Suntory Hall Tokyo, Berliner Philharmonie and Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

As a soloist Mikael Rudolfsson presents a demanding and varied repertoire ranging from Hildegaard von Bingen and Leopold Mozart via Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis and John Cage to the composers of today and tomorrow; Bernhard Gander, Ole Hübner, Konstantia Gourzi or Judit Varga, all of which have dedicated new solo repertoire for him. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras and ensembles worldwide: Hamburger Symphoniker, Orchestre National de Lorraine, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien and the Far East Philharmonic.

In his own solo projects, constellations and ensembles he finds opportunities to showcase all sides of the contemporary trombone - its singing quality as well as its electrifying sounds: with his Ensemble Schwerpunkt embarking on a path of finding a new standard repertoire for brass quintet, with organist Ulfert Smidt or soprano Juliet Fraser.

Mikael Rudolfsson held a position as principal trombone with the Gävle Symphony Orchestra for one season when he was 20 and then continued his studies in Hanover and Basel. Embarking upon a path of passing on the know-how to the next generation, he finds it essential to regularly teach masterclasses, taking him to academies in Germany, Switzerland, France, Noway and Asia.

Recordings and productions for the broadcasting companies ORF, Deutschlandfunk, BR, HR, SWR, WDR, NDR, SRF as well as the labels NEOS, KAIROS, bastille musique and GENUIN serve as proof of his musical work and flexibility.

Since 2017, Mikael Rudolfsson is a member of Klangforum Wien. He was named professor of trombone at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna in 2020.
